In fact, occupancy for independent living homes reached a seven-year high in 2016, according to data from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care.

What is a Patio Home?

Patio homes are considered low-maintenance homes similar to townhouses and condominiums, yet they differ in that you typically don’t share common walls with other units when living in a patio home.

Patio Homes vs. Condos

Simply put, a patio home in a community setting is completely different than condo living.


  • With a condo, you typically don’t gain as many amenities and services that a community can offer, such as home maintenance, housekeeping, dining, daily activities, an aquatic center and more.
  • Home responsibility, maintenance and repair costs will likely remain yours with a condominium.

  • Condo units are often several levels, with no elevators.

For example, at Twin Towers, the majority of our residents move into an independent living patio home in their 60s and 70s while they are healthy, active and can fully enjoy all of our community services and amenities. If or when assistance or care is needed, they can stay within the community but move into an assisted living apartment or skilled nursing arrangement.
